Granite Kitchen Countertops Require Special Care

Granite kitchen countertops are made from natural stone, and are hard and non porous so they are different than marble. The surface can be affected by cleaning products so you should not use chemicals to clean you granite kitchen countertops. Instead you should use cleaners that are vegetable oil based and that are mild or neutral. When cleaning the kitchen granite countertops then it is best to use synthetic scrubbing pads and make sure there is never grime or sand accumulated on them. Read the following guidelines below and you will be able to care for your granite kitchen countertop in the best way.

  • Whenever you see a spill on them then you should take care of it at once. This is because you do not want liquids that are acidic on the countertops for a long time. For example, soft drinks orange juice and alcoholic beverages can harm the tops if they are not wiped off immediately. Spills can easily be wiped off using a paper towel or cloth and if there are any sticky spills then you can take care of those using a damp rag.
  • Another way how you can take care of your granite countertops is to avoid keeping weight on them. Make sure not to place heavy objects on the edges of these tops as they can easily be damaged. Remember not to climb up on them or grab its edges as this can result in the countertops looking less attractive.
  • Remember to always place hot pads underneath hot pans and pots when you want to place them on the countertop. The granite will become too hot to touch and can also scratch because of this.
  • Do not ever use glass cleaners, bleach, ammonia, tile or tub cleaners to clean them. There are many products and cleaners for purchase which are especially made to clean these types of countertops.
  • If you want to cut fruits or tomatoes then make sure you do that on a cutting board because the acids can cause stains.
  • The very last point to remember if you want to take care of the tops is that you need to keep then protected with a sealant. They can be kept looking new all the time by applying a solvent based sealer on them once they are installed inside your kitchen. You will only need to reapply it after two or three years.
