It has become common to draw analogies between granite counters and slate counters. The rising popularity of this analogy has been sparked by the increasing interest in counter tops and accessories. This popularity can be traced back to the wider use of these accessories in the media, especially TV and film. People draw their inspirations from film and TV shows and want to emulate the trends that they see on silver screen and the idiot box.
The main difference between granite counters and slate counters is in their basic composition. Slate is basically a type of metamorphic rock that is known for its sturdiness and extreme strength. Graphite is an allotrope of Carbon and is less sturdy than slate. It is still hard enough to be used in the making of counter tops. It can withstand heavy weights and you do not have to worry about placing hot objects on the top.
Comparing granite counter to slate is not a difficult job. You can start with the basic composition of both materials. Granite is smoother than slate and is available in a diverse range of colors. Slate however is not that diverse. You will basically find it in four or five main colors. These are steel black, brown, red and different shades of light green, yellow and other earthly colors. You will find the colors to be more on the darker side and with very visible and established outlines. It gives an earthy flavor and natural ruggedness that will look great in your kitchen. This ruggedness requires careful cleaning and maintenance and you will have to avoid using drag as it will dent the surface.
A granite counter is available in more diverse colors. There used to be a problem with the color monotony of granite but the discovery of new allotropes has rectified that issue. Now you can easily find granite counter tops in a diverse range of colors. If you are looking for a moss green color with a perfect finish and gloss then you will simply have to do a basic search and you will find the type of slab that you were looking for.
You will find it easier to use granite kitchen counters because of their smoothness and finish. Although slate counters are increasingly being available with better finishes, you will still find them to be a little towards the sturdy side. It all depends on your choice. If you like a sturdy look in your kitchen and have arranged it in an earthly manner then a slate counter top will be a better option for you. Similarly if you have designed your kitchen in a plush and sleek manner then the addition of a granite counter top is better than a slate one.
